Standing In The Gap…
No matter if it was sports, home, or church I grew up hearing this phrase “stand in the gap”. The understanding I always came away with was being there for someone in their time of need. Growing up and even now it is something that I knew but recently the phrase grew a deeper understanding after the action was applied in a different way, a right way I have never acted out before.
Over the past few weeks, I have been having my own little battles going on and several times it really took me off course. I know that I am not immune to battles as we all have them approach us throughout our week or day. There were moments where the battle just really got to me. I was easily agitated, losing focus quickly, and just really wanted to be away (whatever that was supposed to mean). In reality I just wasn’t taking charge of my situations and because of that I was allowing things to linger causing frustration. I really had this thought that I just wanted to get away, but I had no plan or destination in mind, not even just for a drive. There was something missing, there was a gap, a void, an emptiness. “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)
It was that day of the week, one of my favorite moments, random call from my E.M.T Barber. Yes, he really is my barber that really cuts my hair, but his service goes beyond the chair. To be honest, as much as I appreciate his skill as a barber, his words and teachings keep me coming back. I have found out throughout the years that I wasn’t special as he does this with many of his clients.
During our conversation he was talking about standing in the gap and went on to mention that he too was going through his own battles. He went on to explain that we have to stand in the gap for each other. When we stand in the gap for each other and support each other while going through our own battles we are building each other up stronger together. Sometimes that void we might be feeling is that gap needing to be filled by someone while you go through your battle. At the same time someone else can be going through the same feeling needing someone to stand in their gap.
After our conversation we prayed together standing in each other’s gap as we go through our battles. Becoming more focused on the other person coming out of their battle victorious we begin to see our own battle(s) fading. Fading into the background as the source begins to shut down its power. “After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as he had before.” (Job 42:10)
