Music We Hear…

I am sure that many people are like me and enjoy some form of music or sound that is pleasing to their ear. I absolutely love music as I relate it to my writing and life. I can feel every word and every beat allowing me not to just hear or read a word but connect with the words turning it into a feeling and appreciating the work. Ok, I know I know a little deep, but at least it drives home the fact that I love and enjoy music. I will say that I don’t have a specific style of music but a certain sound I prefer to hear. Sometimes I hear the sound I desire in jazz, classical music (I love Vivaldi, listened to Four Seasons a lot in Highschool, but shhhhhh I have never told anyone that), and/but most likely Reggaetón, Ya Tú Sabes. It is not the style of music I desire to hear as much as a specific sound, and once I find it for the day, I lock in. I enjoy the melody, the beat, the structure of the music, the perfect transitions. The perfect sound for the day allows me to lock in with my responsibilities for the day. The perfect sound allows me to flow exactly to the right beat of each step.

The other day I was checking out at the grocery store, and I was walking up to pay I was humming. I didn’t think anything of it as I am not a singer and don’t claim to be, I was just enjoying the moment. The cashier said while laughing, “Hey no humming unless you’re going to sing the words.” I didn’t have any specific words I was humming; I was just humming the perfect sound for the right moment. That sound allowed me and the cashier to exchange in a conversation that was filled with laughter, we held up the line a little, but people were smiling. The point of the story is not to be focused on me but the fact that the right sound in the right moment allowed for the perfect atmosphere.

As much as I enjoy hearing the glory of musicians and singers stepping to the beat of their drums, I realized that the sound out of me plays a role. It plays a role in how I contribute to the atmosphere or the environment around me. No matter if the atmosphere around me is in good condition or not isn’t my concern, but I am only responsible for the sound I contribute. Have you ever been sitting outside and hear birds singing and within an instant, you hear metal crushing and tires screeching trying to come to a halt? In an instant one can go from a clear sky to dark clouds through whichever sound has the bigger influence. Whichever sound grasped and held on to your attention was the sound that brought forth its own form of beauty.

The sound we bring forth in any atmosphere will bring forth its own beauty and contribute its glory to the atmosphere. We are not responsible for the atmosphere, but we are responsible for the sound we contribute. What music do others hear?

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” (James 1:19-20, NIV)
